SWOVUG Q2 2017

SWOVUG Q2 2017 Recap

SWOVUG Q2 2017 - Nimble Storage This past Thursday (April 20th, 2017) was the first SouthWest Ontario Veeam User Group (SWOVUG) meeting of the year. Considering the weather, attendance was pretty good and with that, we had some lively conversations and presentations, which is the whole point of a user group. There were lots of new faces, and many familiar ones, which is always a great mix. ...

Veeam Enterprise Manager - Add vCenter

Veeam's Useful vCenter Plug-in: Quick and Easy Install

I love talking about Veeam with folks, whether it is at a VMUG, the Veeam User Group I run, or even over a couple of drinks. Many of these talks lead to folks finding out about features that may not be all that well known (and for the record, it is not uncommon for me to find out something new). For example, did you know that Veeam Backup & Recovery has a vCenter plugin? Do you know what version it was released in? (the answer is V7). ...

Save The Date: SWOVUG Q2 2017

A New Year is upon us and it is time to get the SouthWest Ontario Veeam User Group back into action! Our last event was in November, and due to some scheduling conflicts I wasn’t able to pull something together for Q1 2017. However, I am excited to announce that our Q2 2017 meeting will be held Thursday, April 20th at: Corporate Event Center Centre for Health & Safety Innovation Conference West Room 5110 Creekbank Road Mississauga, ON ...

Veeam Backup Copy Job - Cloud Connect

Setting Up Veeam Cloud Connect - Client Side

One of the great features that Veeam has is the ability to easily off-site your backups and replicas for you. This can be done in a few fashions, such as using a backup copy job to move data to different media, or you might use the replication feature to move a copy of your VMs offsite. Reminder: replicas != backups; corruption will just be replicated. ...

Veeam Vanguard

Veeam Vanguard 2017

Just a real short (but deeply meaningful to me) post today. Yesterday I was thrilled and humbled to be invited back into the Veeam Vanguard program, for the second year in a row. I have written about the program in the past, as have many others. Thus far, I think Dmitry has one of the most comprehensive pairs of posts that I have seen on the program. This year, we are up to 62 folks. Of the new folks, a large number of them are names that I immediately recognized due to their influence in the ‘vCommunity’. Going back to one of the key values of the program (your peers), I am truly looking forward to meeting these fellow Vanguards, as well as what the 2017 program has to offer. ...

Veeam Office 365 Backup

Veeam Office 365 backup, non-domain accounts, and UNC shares

Veeam recently went GA with their Backup for Microsoft Office 365 product, and like a lot of folks, I’ve been looking forward to it. I was fortunate enough to be involved with the beta, so I knew going into it that setup would not take long (just a couple of minutes really). What I didn’t test a heck of a lot of though were backup locations. The Problem Veeam Backup for Office 365 UNC Error ...

Veeam VMCE Study Tips & Resources

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to take the Veeam Certified Engineer video-on-demand course, which was actually a better delivery mechanism that I had expected. After I completed the course, I did a bunch of studying to sit the VMCE exam, but I failed :( The good news is that it made passing the exam all that much better when I did re-sit it. Failing did offer have some benefits, though. First off, I was able to get a taste for the exam, specifically the wording. The best way I can describe it is to say that it is written for technical correctness, not for ease of reading. The questions can be fairly hard to interpret at times, and this is a common piece of feedback that I have heard from other test takers. ...

Using Veeam Replicas for Granular Restore Points

Recently, when I attended the Toronto vForum, I found myself hanging around the Veeam booth … a lot. I know quite a few of the local folks, so I enjoy chatting with them. They also work with me on my Veeam User Group, so sometimes the conversation steers that way too. But, I also have a passion for helping people. Given that I usually have some form of Veeam swag on, it isn’t uncommon for me to get questions from folks who assume I’m an Systems Engineer. I am always very quick to point out that I don’t work for Veeam, and I find that usually changes the tone of a conversation. Folks like hearing from customers, the good and the bad. I’ll usually try and loop an SE is as well since a) it’s not my booth and b) they will have different experiences and potentially different suggestions. ...

Insight into the Veeam Vanguard program

I was fortunate enough to be selected into the Veeam Vanguard program earlier this year, and it is still something that holds a lot of meaning to me personally. I’ve touched on it very briefly in the past, but I wanted to share some insight into what makes this program so valuable. First off, the Veeam Vanguard program is aimed at advocates for their products, which is fair enough. Veeam employees cannot be part of the program, and in at least two cases now, Vanguards have made the transition to Veeam employees, and thus have had to relinquish their Vanguard status. There are currently about 50 of us, which creates a nice team-like environment where we almost all know each other by sight. ...

Save The Date: SWOVUG Q4 2016

Given how big of a success the last SWOVUG (Southwest Ontario Veeam User Group) meeting was, planning the next one started shortly after. Now that we’ve come far enough along, I am excited to announce the details for the next gathering. The upcoming SWOVUG meeting will be held Wednesday, November 23rd 2016. We’ll be sticking to the Mississauga area given the great turn out from the last meeting. This time around we’ll be at: ...
